Sony’s Spider-Man Universe continues its rocky 2024 with the disappointing performance of Kraven the Hunter. The film, which concluded its theatrical run recently, has officially become the lowest-grossing film in the entire franchise.

Despite a star-studded cast and a unique premise, Kraven the Hunter failed to captivate audiences. The film’s underwhelming box office performance, coupled with mixed reviews from critics, has raised questions about the future of Sony’s superhero universe.

With a budget estimated between $110 and $130 million, Kraven the Hunter struggled to recoup its costs. Its $26 million global opening was the lowest for any SSU film, setting a grim precedent. The film’s release date, sandwiched between other highly anticipated blockbusters like Wicked, Gladiator 2, and Moana 2, further hindered its chances of success.

This year has been a rollercoaster ride for Sony’s superhero slate. While Venom: The Last Dance managed to perform decently at the box office, Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter both underperformed. As the studio moves forward, it will need to carefully evaluate its strategy to ensure the future success of its superhero franchises.
